An intensive course back to school laptops
Generally speaking laptops are categorized by their screen size. The option traditional students is a current laptop with a 15.6-inch screen, although in recent years computer manufacturers have introduced more models consumption with 13 - or 14-inch screens. These are a little easier to bear, but the screen and keyboard are still large enough to use comfortably for long. Most of these screens use 720p which means they have a screen resolution of 1366 x 768. Tend ultra small screen to be expensive and lack some features. Netbooks and tablets with screens even smaller than the devices in good company, but neither is a substitute a good student laptop. At the other extreme, notebooks with 17 - and even 18-inch displays are so large they really are best suited as replacements desktop at home.
Intel launched its latest 32nm dual-core processor in January, and many copies of the school-to-laptops use these cores i3 and i5 Core Intel chips combined with integrated high-definition graphics. In May, the competitor AMD updates its current handheld platform, which includes 45 nm double, triple and quad core processors (with names like Athlon II, Phenom Turion II and II) and AMD's ATI Mobility Radeon HD. Intel continues to dominate, but AMD is finding its way into more laptops because the company has improved performance and battery life, and lower cost chips. In addition, Notebooks with AMD graphics or NVidia integrated or discrete graphics will perform better but at the expense of some battery life. Some computers laptop graphics card change integrated with the battery, and discrete graphics when plugged-in, giving the best of both.
Apart from this, basic specifications are pretty standard. Most laptops come back to school this year will have 3-4 GB of system memory, a 320GB drive or harder and an internal DVD drive. higher-priced models offered features such as faster processors, discrete graphics, high resolution screen and Blu-ray drives (which can also record standard DVD discs).
HP
Last month, HP unveiled a slew of new laptops for consumers and business users (choose one HP laptop battery ). Of these, the Pavilion dv5 and DV6 are the best options for most students. HP Pavilion dv series is a workhorse of current, but these models provided design cues from the raw series Envy (Just as Apple's MacBook), including a metallic-looking case, great keyboard and touchpad with buttons chiclet integrated. The dv5 is particularly interesting because it has an unusual screen size 14.5-inch diagonal split the difference between the custom of 14.1 and 15.6-inch models. In other words, you get a screen slightly larger than the typical 14-inch laptop in a package that is reasonably portable, weighing just over 5 pounds.
Best Buy currently sells a processor configuration with a 2.3GHz AMD Turion dual-core II, 4 GB of memory, 320GB hard drive and DVD recorder for $ 600. You can also find the dv4, an older design based on a 14.1-inch (1280 × 800) screen, for less. Although it is larger and slightly dv5 heavier than the 15.6-inch DV6 is also popular among students. It starts at $ 700 at Best Buy with a 2.8 GHz processor AMD Phenom II, 4GB memory, a 500GB hard drive and a DVD recorder. The Pavilion dv7, a large desktop replacement with a screen of 17.3 inches, is better suited for home use. If you is on a tight budget, the 14-inch and 15.6-inch G42t HP Compaq Presario and HP CQ62z G62t are all under $ 500.
Since the Pavilion dv series is available almost everywhere, it is surprising that these new models have not received more coverage reviews, although a few sites have posted comments. Laptopmag considered the dv5, but so far PCMag seems the only major site that has been pursued both at the new dv5 and DV6. All reviewers seem to like the new design, which is an improvement over Brilliant finish with a volume of fingerprints. Both sites were critical of the lack of discrete graphics, but this is largely because HP has positioned the new dv series models such as entertainment books "with a choice of Blu-ray. The truth is that the vast majority of buyers will be satisfied with a i3 Core processor and integrated graphics.
The real problem is the touchpad again, it is difficult to use because it is too sensitive. Both Laptopmag and PCMag had problems with it. HP has since released a software update that should fix the problem. PCMag tested an AMD-based configuration and duration of DV6 Battery was surprisingly good-about 4.5 hours on MobileMark 2007, which is characterized in that the battery life of AMD has been the Achilles heel.
If you are looking for a smaller and lighter laptop, the Pavilion DM4 is a good choice. It is thinner than the other Pavilion laptops-about of an inch thick, weighs 4.4 pounds and has a durable all-metal case and appeal, all of which makes it easy to slip into a backpack. As with the dv4, is based on a 14-inch screen, but DM4 has a higher resolution of 1366 x 768. Unlike the Pavilion dv series notebooks is Intel and only costs more. Start the Best Buy model at $ 750 with an i5 Core 2.26GHz processor, 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive and DVD recorder. Even higher up the food chain envy HP 14 is a high-end model with a design similar to Apple MacBook professionals and some formidable specifications including processors and optional discrete graphics quad-core. It starts at $ 1,100 with a 14.5 inch screen (1600 × 900), 2.4 GHz dual-core processor-core i3-370M, 4GB of memory, graphics ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 switchable graphics, 320GB hard drive and DVD recorder. This is overkill for most students, but money is certainly more portable Powerful 14 inch can buy.
The Envy 14 only in the transport has begun in the last week or so, and I have yet to see any reviews important but should be published shortly. The Pavilion DM4, however, has received good reviews. Design suffers from the same touchpad as the dv5 and DV6 envy, but this offset by the thin DM4 good looking solid specifications, including options for Core i7 processors and discrete graphics and long battery life. As PCMag put it, the DM4 is "Tuning a touchpad away from greatness."
Acer
Acer, which does not sell its computers directly has a confusing variety of models for different retailers and geographies. The best way to get a handle on what Acer has to offer is to look at what is available in major retail stores or Web sites. You can find several models of 15.6-inch Acer for about $ 500 or less, usually with a single or dual-AMD core, 3 GB or less of memory and 250GB hard drives, but I'd recommend spending a little more for a model with an Intel processor core I3 as Acer Aspire 5700 series. Both Sears.com and Target.com are selling the same model (the Acer Aspire 5741-5763) to 15.6 inches (1366 x 768) screen, i3-350M Core 4 GB of memory, 320GB hard drive and DVD recorder for $ 630. Walmart.com has an almost identical model (Acer Aspire AS5745-5425), but with a Blu-ray player, which doubles DVD burner, of $ 698-a very good price for a Blu-ray equipped laptop decent specifications (featuring drummer "acer> Battery laptop).
One of the newest models from Acer, the 15.6-inch Acer Aspire AS5745, is also available at Sears and Target, with specifications similar, but with a bigger hard drive and a Blu-ray player for about $ 750. But Newegg.com has much better: the Aspire AS5745-3633 have a smaller unit drive (320 GB) but has a 2.40GHz Core i5-450 and the Blu-ray for the same price. Some higher-priced configurations of the Aspire 5745 also include multi-touch screen or graphics Nvidia discrete. The so-called Gemstone Blue models, which can instead of the dark blue cap, have been around a guest bit longer, but have received good and also offer a lot of bang for the buck.
Of all the laptops I've seen at Computex last month, I was very impressed with the line Acer time series X, which have become available in the U.S. for the first time. The models would be best suited for students include 14-inch 4820T and 5820T for 15.6 inches, but the series also includes the timeline X 11.6-inch (1830T) and 13.3 inches (3820T) variants. Laptops Timeline X are less than an inch thick, but incorporate standard voltage i3 i5 core or Core processors, optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics, and an internal DVD drive. Acer recently told me that not all U.S. models will have discrete graphics options, however.
Finally, do not forget the brand Acer, Gateway. Two new thin and light models, the ID49 and ID59 14-inch 15.6-inch, seem particularly interesting. The ID49 Gateway starts at $ 680 with 14-inch 1366 × 768, Core i3-350M, 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive and DVD recorder. But the most attractive configuration is $ 850 with a 2.4 GHz Core i5-450, 4GB memory, graphics card Nvidia GeForce 330M GT discrete graphics Optimus switching technology, 500 GB hard drive DVD recorder and a laptop that is less than an inch thick and weighs 5.0 pounds. It's not just the version of the ID59 and is $ 800 with a 15.6-inch 1366 × 768, 2.26 GHz Core i5-430M, 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive and DVD recorder.
Most of these models from Acer and Gateway are so new they have not yet received full feedback.
Dell
Dell Inspiron laptop last consumer is the R series, which includes 14 -, 15 - and the 17-inch models. The R series is based on the 32nm core of Intel Core processors i3 and i5 dual core, but also offers optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD discreet. The Inspiron 14R starts at $ 550 on dell.com, but I'd recommend upload configuration with a basic 2.26 i3-350M, 4 GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive and a DVD recorder. The 15R Inspiron with an identical configuration, but with a 15.6-inch 1366 × 768, is currently $ 570. Configurations with discrete graphics start at around $ 700. The largest 14 Inspiron 15 Inspiron models, often use the previous generation of Intel processors and graphics are still available at dell.com at lower prices.
Reviews of the series have R been solid. The new design has achieved a good grade, and although the case is still plastic (with the appearance of title = "Battery dell laptop "dell laptop battery>) Laptopmag.com notes that the magnesium alloy frame makes it more resistant to incorporating previous models. Laptopmag.com CNET and tested a configuration with discrete graphics, which lasted only three hours in battery tests, but was well north PCMag four hours with a Costco configuration with integrated graphics. Costco settings also comes with an extra year of warranty coverage and other few extras.
Like HP, Acer, Dell has high-end models with the same screen sizes, which are often marketed as laptops entertainment, but in reality there are a lot of overlap between the Inspiron series R and lower-end configurations of the Studio series. The difference is that Studio series can be configured with high-end specifications (not to mention screen resolutions above 1366 × 768). For example, you can pick up the Studio 15 with a processor Quad-Core 1.6GHz Core i7-720QM, 3GB memory, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 with 1GB graphics, 320GB hard drive and DVD recorder for $ 1,000. Finally, there is the XPS Studio, which currently starts at around $ 1,200 with the same screen size and processor, but with 4GB of memory and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 with 1GB of graphics driving a 1600 × 900 resolution. Dell laptops, Alienware are designed primarily for players who need high-end performance 3D graphics. But the Inspirons meet the needs of most students, and dual-core processors and integrated graphics provide a better life battery anyway.
Apple
Both the MacBook and MacBook Pro updates have been received in recent months, mostly to incorporate faster processors and powerful graphics. Only from a hardware perspective, the latest MacBooks do not stack up well to its competition Windows. The 13-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro are based on a 13.3-inch 16:10 screen with a resolution of 1280 × 800, while most laptops 16:09 have screens with higher resolution (1366 × 768). Instead of using the latest kernel and i3 i5 processor, Apple chose to pair older Core 2 Duo NVIDIA GeForce 320M with graphics (although this gives the MacBook a boost large graphics and switching technology in the Apple MacBook Pro offers a good time battery). The basic configuration includes a small (250 GB) 5400 rpm hard drive and Blu-ray, something available on laptops Windows costs hundreds least not yet an option. Finally MacBook has fewer ports and connectors including Windows laptops budget. For example, the MacBook still not have a memory card slot (although the MacBook Pro now do).
The MacBook is $ 1,000 with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB of memory, graphics GeForce 320M, 250 GB hard drive and a DVD slot load. Since the MacBook Pro line, which was updated in April, the 13 - and 15-inch models are in better conditions for students. The 13-inch MacBook Pro starts at $ 1,200 with almost the same configuration as the MacBook, but you get double the memory. All MacBook Pro also have the aluminum case, instead of polycarbonate, and a backlit keyboard. The 15-inch MacBook Pro is much better-equipped with a 15.4 inch (1440 × 900) screen, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor, 4 GB of memory, GeForce 330M, 320 GB hard drive and DVD recorder. But it also begins in 1800 dollars which is significantly more expensive than most laptops back to school. You can find Windows laptops similar setup for less than $ 1,000. Of course people do not choose MacBooks to the specifications of your hardware, but who elect to design and Mac OS X and iLife software. It's just a matter of how much value we attach to these less quantifiable aspects. Reviewers seem to attach some value to them, and the new MacBook and MacBook Pros go receiving the highest score in all areas.
