Is there a way to disable the keyboard of a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6?

I am very busy, and I run a lot of different processes of my MacBook to keep my busy life. Sometimes these processes can take a while. Therefore, I will disable the automatic sleep mode and turn off the screen while leaving processes running, and I'll walk away from the computer to do other things. However, I have a problem with my cat lying on my keyboard, my computer hot. Sometimes this destroys the processes I have running. Is there a way to turn off the Macbook Pro keyboard so that she can lye on my keyboard without messing anything up?
