How does a laptop i7 compared with the highest specifications Macbook Pro?

More specifically I have a HP that has a DV6t 720QM Core i7 processor. I'm not that good at all this computer jargon, but I wanted a MacBook Pro but it was too expensive. I want to know if this is more powerful that the best you can get macbook pro and this processor is more powerful than any dual-core processor out there, even in desktop high-end dual core? Thanks
